Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

The terms Counselling and Therapy are sometimes used inter-changeably and this can cause confusion.

Both psychotherapy and counselling offer short term and ongoing therapy but the training for counsellors and psychotherapists is different.  For the most part counselling trainings are shorter and counselling can be solution focused and goal orientated.

Psychotherapy training takes many years and requires an understanding of the process of personal development over time.  The work focuses on a client’s relationship with them-self and with other people and offers space and time for deep exploration and understanding.

Both counselling and therapy can have a far reaching impact on your life.  Essentially it doesn’t matter what we call our work  – we will discuss how best to proceed when we first meet and will build in regular assessments of how things are going as we continue.

How long will it take?

I offer ongoing or brief therapy.  When we first meet we will agree a plan that feels appropriate given what you would like to achieve, the time available and your financial resources and will regularly review where we are to ensure that the work continues to feel relevant and engaging.  .   Each person is an individual and each individual will work in a different way at a different pace.

Do I have to talk about my past?

The focus of our work will be the themes that have brought you to therapy or counselling now and how you experience your life day to day.  It is possible to work without looking backwards at all and it can sometimes be useful to explore childhood experiences so as to shed light on the present.   When times have been traumatic in the past it can be useful to explore and express the feelings you may have not been able to deal with at the time.

If you are sure that you don’t want to look at the past our work will be guided by your preference.
